After a few hours' sleep, the man was up and trawling the town in his car looking for the right target. The spring sun was back, warming the interior of the vehicle yet he didn't slide the window down, instead he clicked the heater up, enjoying the warm air that blasted into his face. Even though the fire at the barn had turned into a disappointment it had provided an insight into what he had to do. He now knew that the diversion would have to be more dramatic than a barn fire, more problematic for the fire department, something that would require them to attend en masse.

He drove past a row of terraced houses that slowly gave way to semis, and then detached properties set back from the widening road by long gardens. Passing the hospital, he slowed down slightly, his eyes tracking the building on the left, two ambulances were parked under the canopy at the front, he could see one or two people smoking by the main doors. With regret, he left the hospital behind, it would have been wonderful to torch the place but the truth was he would never be able to manage it, besides hospitals were all tiled walls and floors, nothing for the flames to get hold of. At the roundabout, he turned left and headed down the hill, sticking to the speed limit and ignoring the occasional car that blasted past, horn blaring.

More houses left and right, he supposed he could have set fire to any of the properties he passed, after all it would only need the fuel squirted through the letterbox followed by a lit match and the fire would do the rest. Though the truth was he somehow knew that once he saw the flickering flames he would be unable to tear himself away from the blaze, he would need to see what happened, and time would be wasted.

The man dismissed the idea, he needed something big, a place that would light the night sky and bring the firefighters out in droves.

Reaching the traffic lights, he drummed his fingers on the wheel, his mind running through the options. When he saw the building in the distance his eyes widened slightly, the lights changed and he moved across the junction, his gaze flicking towards the huge, brick building.

Moving into the right-hand lane he turned onto the service road that led onto the sprawling industrial estate. Corrugated metal buildings, left and right, small units offering services from fitting a new clutch to your car for a bargain price to a unit that offered to fix any lawnmower.

Yet his eyes kept moving toward the building that loomed over all others, rearing into the spring sky; three flags fluttered at the very top of the building and he licked his lips as he drew level. Pulling up on the left he looked out of the side window, the building had a series of huge doors set into the wall and he watched as a fork lift truck appeared from inside the building, a huge reel of paper clamped between the jaws.
